Stormy Shore

Now that my pieces for the Muffin Tin Challenge are finished, I'm going to share the stories behind them. Many of my pieces have various inspiration or stories behind them. Some start before the piece was made, some happen as the piece is being created.
This one started a while ago with the piece of Abalone I used on it. My husband and I went down to the Mission in San Juan Bautista on one of his days off during the holiday break. In the park gift store, they sell Abalone pieces that have been gathered by the local Ohlone tribe on the shores of Monterey Bay. So I grabbed a few to use in my jewelry creations.

Fast forward to this month. We have had some historic rains in my part of California. I happen to love the rain. We have very hot, dry summers here, with no rain for months on end. This is my favorite time of the year aka " The Rainy Season." This round of storms really dumped the water on us. We had local flooding, kids were paddling their inflatable rafts in the streets, creeks that haven't left their banks in YEARS were overflowing.
I was happily creating, inspired by the storms. Wondering what was washing up on the beaches, just over the mountains from us. Wondering what was making it's way in to our local reservoirs, being washed down in the stream beds that have been dry, some since last rainy season, some since before this drought started 5 years ago.

It only seemed natural to go with water themed ingredients for this piece, but to use more rustic pieces to go with the earthy feel of the shore washed Abalone. So I focused on the pendant first. Abalone, a raw Quartz point, a polished but free-form shaped nugget of Peruvian Blue Opal, and a Cultured Pearl. Some copper wire, always at hand, to wrap, swirl, and hang everything from. A drop shape, then a drop shaped piece of Amazonite to fill the space that seemed like it needed to be filled. Now what to hang it all from????
At a recent bead show I noticed more and more matte finished stone beads. I've always loved stone beads that still look like stones, unpolished, rustic, looking like they haven't been unearthed for too long. I grabbed a strand or two of matte finished Amazonite with lots of color variations in it. Perfect for this piece, but could potentially overwhelm. A short segment, knotted on waxed linen, connected with copper chain, accented with some more Amazonite. It all fell together.

I try to make each piece of jewelry pleasantly tactile. This piece does not disappoint. The pendant also makes a soothing sound when the components clink against the shell. Almost like a natural wind chime.

“My soul is full of longing
for the secret of the sea,
and the heart of the great ocean
sends a thrilling pulse through me.”

Muffin Tin Challenge 2017

 http://humblebeads.blogspot.com/2017/01/muffin-tin-challenge-official-enteries.html
The 2017 Muffin Tin Challenge has come to an end. I've managed to complete nine pieces to knock myself out of the post holiday slump. We've had a round of big storms here in NorCal over the past 10 days with torrential rains that have lead to localized flooding. Thankfully nothing major in my area, other than some floating gophers which were rescued, dried out, and returned to the wild.

Some of these are pieces I had started at various times throughout the past several months and not completed, others are brand new from start to finish.

A big thanks to Heather Powers from HumbleBeads for this challenge!! It's the perfect way to start off the jewelry making year!

Progress. Of sorts.

Making progress on the Muffin Tin Challenge. 6 pieces completed, 4 of them shown here. It's been far too stormy to get photos of everything in decent light.

7:11 am and still no sleep. I know I'm the one who will lose.

And the woman may truly care
But the woman is so tired

Return of the Sun

My first completed piece from the Muffin Tin Challenge is an homage to the season that I'm calling 'Return of the Sun'.

Last year I went a little crazy and started making a bunch of pendants using the Tiffany technique of soldering. It's a technique used in stained glass, that can be used for making alllllll sorts of things, including jewelry. All it takes is some copper foil tape, lead free solder, a soldering iron, and whatever setup you prefer for your soldering work. You can Google and find tutorials, supplies, etc. It's a lot of fun, addictive as all get out, and I'm getting off topic here.

Back to the necklace. The sun is slowly creeping back to us in the northern hemisphere. I've had this Sunstone pendant sitting in my mess of a bead table for a year, looking at me, shimmering, just waiting. So I tossed it in to one of the muffin cups and went with my gut.

I had just recently gotten some beautiful, untreated, rustic Iolite coins that have some shimmery red/orange inclusions. This often gets called "Bloodshot Iolite" and looks like a blue version of Sunstone. LOVE it! Perfect companion for the pendant. Then, what's perfect to balance the bold sun? Some Moonstone. Wrap it on some copper. Keep it simple and light. Finish with copper chain. Voila!

Muffin Tin Challenge 2017

I've been gone for a while, doing my thing over in Facebook land mostly. But, I'm thinking it might be time to get back to this blog thing. Especially now that it's easy to do from my phone!

I'm starting this new year by playing along with Humblebeads' Muffin Tin Challenge 2017. After spending the past several months in creating for the Holiday shopping season mode, I can now get back in to creating for the heck of it mode. Which means I have lots of random bits laying around that need finishing. Heather's challenge is a great way to kick start my creative momentum.
